As I write this on the morning of April 21, 2026, Victor Wembanyama is only a day removed from winning his first of definetly many Defensive Player of the Year awards. Not only did he do this, but he became the first unanimous DPOY in NBA history, something which I believe is very deserved.

This brings the question: Will he win MVP? Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is by far the favorite, and will most likely win, but you'd be funny not to bat an eye at Wemby after his historic award win he just got. Him, SGA, and Jokic will form this year's NBA MVP finalists, and to me, this is one of the more exciting races of the modern NBA.

Wemby has led the league in blocks every year of his young career, already establishing himself as one of the league's great shot blockers. Along with averaging 3.1 blocks per game this year, he consistently gets 11+ rebounds a game, making him a force in the paint.

Something you don't really see on the box score that helps Wemby's case even more is the way he limits other players from shooting in the paint. His sheer frame at 7'4 (supposedly even higher) and his 8 foot wingspan discourages smaller players from even attempting shots when faced against him, limiting shot opprotunities for opposing teams.

The Spurs opened their road to the Finals with a great win against the Trail Blazers in Game 1, where Wemby scored 35, breaking Tim Duncan's record for the highest points in a Spurs player's playoff debut (he scored 32). They seem to be playoff ready, and I have them playing the Celtics in the Finals, so hopefully, they keep their hot streak going.

Victor Wembanyama is the future of the NBA. He's 7'4, a great shot blocker, and arguably the best 3-level scorer we've seen since Kevin Durant. I'm excited to see how his first NBA playoff run goes, and am very excited to see how he develops as the future star of the NBA.
