African Nations Were Amazing This World Cup. You Can Watch Them All In A Year.

A lot of the highlights of the 2026 World Cup involved African nations. Cape Verde's magical run, DR Congo and Egypt going toe to toe with Ronaldo and Messi respectively, and more. For many viewers, this will be the last time they watch these squads for at least the next four years. But, if you want to watch these countries continuously compete in what I believe to be one of the world's best international competitions, you only need to wait a year.

One of my personal hot takes is that the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), is a better tournament competitively and entertainingly than the Copa America, South America's premier continental cup. This World Cup proves part of this, as 9/10 African teams who competed advanced to the knockout rounds, the highest success rate out of any confederation. Because of this, AFCON 2027 should be one of the most-watched and most competitive editions in recent memory.

AFCON 2027 will be hosted in 3 countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, making it the first to be hosted in 3 countries, and the first to be hosted in East Africa since 1976 in Ethiopia. This will also be the last tournament hosted under AFCON's current biennial structure, as it will move to being an every 4-years tournament just like most FIFA tournaments, starting in 2028.

The tournament will be featuring some of Africa's most beautiful stadiums, including 3 new stadiums and 2 renovated ones.

Qualification for the tournament is about to start later this year, and will take place during 3 different international breaks in September, November, and March, where teams will play each other twice. The top two teams in both groups (outside of the ones where there are host nations) qualify for AFCON, which will take place in June and July 2027.

Most of you reading will most likely pick one of the 10 African nations who qualified and competed in last year's World Cup, but I'll be rooting for my mother's country of origin: Cameroon, who has historically been one of Africa's most dominant teams, winning 5 AFCON's, the 2nd highest total, just behind Egypt's 7.

AFCON is pretty hard to find on TV, but it will most likely be available to watch on channels like beIN sports, Fubo, and streaming service DAZN.
