March Madness is almost done, and we saw some of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament. One of them was the St. Peter’s Peacocks.
The Peacocks became the first 15th seed in March Madness to defeat the number 2 seed, by beating Kentucky 85-79. They also became the first number 15 seed to advance into the Elite 8.
St. Peter’s literally erased all of the submitted brackets and denied the chance of a perfect bracket. The team will probably go down as the biggest underdog in March Madness history.
Another underdog that made a deep run this year are the Miami Hurricanes, who were the 10 seed and also made it to the Elite 8. This is the farthest the U has made it in March Madness.
The Hurricanes knocked out the number 2 seeded Auburn Tigers and the number 7 seeded USC Trojans on their journey to the Elite 8, two of the favorites for March Madness.
I love to see the storyline of these 2 teams, and how they got this far, but being on almost no one’s brackets. In the future, I think the NCAA should have an underdog tournament to see who is the best.
The NCAA actually does have games before March Madness where underdogs duel, but the games aren’t really in a tournament.
Even in the title game, there are underdogs. This year’s title game isn’t a 1 seed vs 1 seed type, it’s a 1 seed vs 8 seed type. So in this case, the Tar Heels are the underdogs, although they took down the powerhouse-like Peacocks.
The last time a 1 seed faced an 8 seed in the title game was 1985, when Villanova beat Georgetown 66-64. Now, it’s time for the national championship, so buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
